And the Winner of the 2017 Froyo Shop Halloween Spirit Award Winner Is…

Fro-yo girl here. Happy Froyo Halloween! Halloween is my favorite holiday and during Halloween season, I’m always on the lookout for Halloween spirit at froyo shops. Each year I’ll pick out a froyo shop (or froyo chain) for showing the most Halloween spirit.

The previous winners were:

  • 2013: Menchie’s
  • 2014: 16 Handles
  • 2015: Wakaberry
  • 2016: Menchie’s

Last year’s winner, Menchie’s, introduced collectible limited time Halloween spoons (Chip and Mookie in costume). Yes! This year, they’ve brought back the same Halloween spoons as last year, and their Harvest pumpkin flavor. I have seen several Menchie’s locations with Halloween decorations, like the one in Eagle Rock (Los Angeles).

This year’s winner boasts three Halloween inspired NEW offerings: Dark Froyo with activated charcoal, Dark Waffle Bowl with activated charcoal and an Orange Chocolate Drizzle that’s orange colored. And the winner is…Yogurty’s, the Canadian, self-serve frozen yogurt chain.

I must say that I'm disappointed that Yogurtland and Pinkberry didn't bring back pumpkin froyo. At least some Yogurtland locations had candy corn as a special topping.

For a list of shops with Halloween specials, check out the IFYA’s list: http://internationalfrozenyogurt.com/news/2017-halloween-froyo-shop-specials/

Pinkberry is Being Served at Clifton’s Republic in Downtown Los Angeles

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been wanting to go to The Pacific Seas tiki bar inside Clifton’s Republic since it opened last fall but I heard that reservations were necessary and that they were booked for weeks. So, I decided to wait for the excitement to die down before going. I didn’t actually see the Pacific Seas because we went too early in the day (it opens at 6 PM), but we decided to check out Clifton’s Cafeteria instead.

Clifton’s is hard to describe but it’s a part of old LA history (Ray Bradbury and Walt Disney were regulars). It was a well-known chain of cafeterias, with the original location founded in downtown LA in 1931. This location was reopened in 2015 under new ownership. It’s much more than a cafeteria. There are multiple levels with the cafeteria, a ballroom, The Monarch Bar, the Gothic Bar, Pacific Seas tiki bar, gift shop and interesting décor.

People come because of the over the top fantasy décor. There’s a huge redwood tree in the center, more trees, a waterfall, taxidermy (buffalo, bear, peacocks, foxes, etc.), and a rock like chapel you can enter. The place is like a forest meets lodge, meets natural history museum. The interior is dark and it feels like you’re stepping into a different world.

The cafeteria is pretty amazing – so many options and it’s nicer than it used to be (prices are higher too, but not crazy). They serve free range chicken and use quality ingredients. There’s a salad/soup station, carving station, pizza/sandwich station, fresh baked pastries, breakfast bar (we were there on brunch), dessert station (cakes, jello, pies), PINKBERRY station, Stumptown Coffee, Rishi tea, housemade lemonade, etc. Grab a tray and get what looks appealing. Some of the items are cooked to order.

And yes, they have frozen yogurt. They used to serve soft serve ice cream and switched to Pinkberry a few months ago. This is the only place in the downtown core to get Pinkberry!!!! And you can serve yourself. There aren’t as many toppings. Toppings included gummy bears, nuts, coconut, yogurt chips, peanut butter chips, crumbled Oreos, mini M&Ms and granola. A small is $4.95 and a medium is $5.95, flat rate. Sadly, the machine didn’t have a sign saying frozen yogurt and the flavors, original and pomegranate, weren’t even labeled. I didn’t get the feeling that they ever offered other flavors.

* Pinkberry original and pomegranate frozen yogurt: The texture was icier than usual but the flavor was definitely Pinkberry!

This must be the most interesting place to get Pinkberry and the only flat rate, self-serve location that I know of. If you have good swirling skills, you can get a lot for $5 plus tax.

I still have to visit the Pacific Seas, but I doubt it has frozen yogurt.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Itibiti Yogurt Mask Review

Fro-yo girl here. I spotted Itibiti Yogurt Mask at Candy Doll Beauty in San Francisco’s Japantown. The packaging has an oversized picture that looks like a giant bottle of Yakult, the probiotic beverage. One mask is $3.50.

The yogurt mask does have yogurt in it. It is imported from Korea. One pouch is 25g. It is a mask sheet with cutouts for your eyes, nose and mouth. The packaging says that the mask will make your skin look moist, smooth and flexible. It also improves wrinkles.

The directions are to cleanse and tone, cover your face with the mask, remove the mask after 10-20 minutes and gently pat the face for the remaining serum to be absorbed by the skin.

* Yogurt mask: The mask was heavy, wet, sticky, slimy and cold. It smelled like Yakult mixed with alcohol. It felt cold at first but then it warmed up. It remained sticky and after removing the mask, there was a considerable amount of the sticky fluid left. It was absorbed by my skin when I slept. The mask was very moisturizing, so it did live up to its claims. I wasn’t crazy about the fragrance though.

Ingredients: Water, glycerin, methylpropanediol, yogurt extract, polysorbate 80, hydroxyethylcellulose, adenosine, disodium EDTA, camellia sinensis leaf extract, lactobacillus/lemon peel ferment extract, lactobacillus/punica granatum fruit ferment extract, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, sodium hyaluronate, phenoxyethanol, carboner, triethanolamine, fragrance.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Baldwin Hills (Los Angeles) Grand Opening

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurtland Baldwin Hills opened in August 2017. Baldwin Hills is a neighborhood in Central Los Angeles, bordering Culver City and close to the Coliseum. The grand opening celebration is today, October 22, 2017.

The schedule of events:

  • 11 AM – 2 PM: free froyo and toppings
  • 2 PM – 5 PM: balloon artist and face painting
  • 5 PM – 8 PM: prizes and giveaways
  • 8 PM – close: buy one, get one free

I went for the free froyo, of course. They handed everyone a small cup which you could fill with as much froyo and toppings as you wanted. To encourage you to sign up for the app, anyone who signed up was able to spin the prize wheel for a chance to win Yogurtland tote bags, slap on spoon bracelets, giant spoons, coupons and beach balls. They had a live DJ, Vicious Lee.

The new location is between Subway and Chipotle, across from Macy’s. They have 16 self-serve flavors a day and the usual Yogurtland toppings. The green tile wall has been replaced by the sleek faux wood wall. Normally, it’s 47 cents an ounce.

We received coupons for future visits good at the Baldwin Hills location only.

P.S. I heard that more ice cream flavors are in the works. The new soft serve ice cream is a big hit.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Celebrating the Ninth Blogiversary

Fro-yo girl here. Today, Fro-yo Girl Speaks, my blog, turns nine. So much has happened since October 2008, including the waxing and waning of frozen yogurt itself. Only two of the top 10 froyo shops that I named in October 2008 are still open. The number of froyo shops that have closed far outnumbers the ones that are still open, but nine years is a long time. On a positive note, very few Menchie’s and Yogurtland locations have closed in the Bay Area. And, froyo is now an official word in the Merriam Webster dictionary.

I still have many froyo shops to visit in Southern California and I’m happy to see that there are high quality, independent shops like Yoga-urt in Glendale, CA and Go Greek. Yes, I miss my Bay Area froyo shops, but I feel like Souvla’s froyo has inspired other restaurants across the country, including Spread Kitchen in downtown LA, GRK Fresh Kitchen, Kentro in Fullerton, CA, Kali (new) in Palo Alto, CA, Yalla, and Greko in Nashville, TN. These eateries only offer one flavor of froyo, plain, with gourmet Greek inspired toppings.

After all, plain frozen yogurt is still one of the best if not the best, flavor available. I like the simplicity of this new wave of Greek froyo, with the emphasis on quality over quantity. Will it have wide appeal? Probably not, but it will appeal to those who appreciate the true taste of yogurt and it seems fitting, since original tart yogurt is what started wave 2 of the froyo frenzy. It’s not gimmicky, like activated charcoal froyo, 24K gold froyo, unicorn froyo, froyo rolls, or liquid nitrogen froyo, but it’s just great froyo.

If you love frozen yogurt, be sure to join the International Frozen Yogurt Association, the association that I founded in 2013. It’s free to join. The monthly enewsletter is also free and will deliver froyo industry news to your inbox.

Thank you so much to my fans and readers and keep eating frozen yogurt!

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Vietnamese Yogurt (aka Ya-ua or Da-ua) at Thanh Loi Tofu

Fro-yo girl here. I’ve been a fan of Vietnamese yogurt for years. The best place to look for Vietnamese yogurt (aka, da-ua or ya-ua) is a Vietnamese deli, tofu, or sandwich shop. I know that I’ve seen it at multiple Lee’s Sandwiches locations. Vietnamese yogurt is typically flavored with condensed milk. Have you ever had condensed milk with original tart froyo? It’s so good. Yes, condensed milk is sweet but it brings out the tanginess of the yogurt.

Vietnamese yogurt is usually been thick and creamy, on the sweet side but very tangy. the texture is like a pudding. One place I’d like to recommend is Thanh Loi Tofu in South El Monte, CA. They make their own soy milk, tofu pudding, tofu, fish cakes, sausages, waffle cookies, and more. Look in the refrigerated case for their yogurt ($1.85). It comes in a clear cup. I like to add fresh fruit to the cup and sometimes granola or nuts. Their soy milk is wonderful too. The unsweetened soy milk is naturally sweet.

However, I don't recommend the Vietnamese yogurt at Tam's Bakery (9783 Westminster Ave. #104, Garden Grove, CA). It doesn't have that lovely tang that most Vietnamese yogurt has. It's made with dry whole milk rather than condensed milk.

Tip: Look for condensed milk as an ingredient.

I’ve been contemplating what would happen if I were to stick the cup in the freezer. I think it could be something magical.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Lip Smacker Unicorn Froyo Review

Fro-yo girl here. Lip Smacker challenged fans to come up with creative new Lip Smackers flavors in the 2017 Lip Smacker Taste Maker contest. Five finalists faced off, and the winning flavor was determined by popular vote. My Nguyen’s flavor idea, Unicorn Froyo, won!

Lip Smacker created the Unicorn Froyo flavor, which is described as “sweet and tart with hints of blueberry, strawberry and dragon fruit.” The balm is an online exclusive, available for a limited time only. It’s priced at $2.50.

The packaging is pretty simple with no pictures of unicorns or froyo. The balm is a shimmery purple-pink color. The shimmer and color are subtle. The scent smells like sweet berries but I didn’t smell the yogurt. But the balm was moisturizing and I’m glad it wasn’t glittery.

The yogurt scent is very hard to capture. I’ve tried many yogurt cosmetic products and they usually don’t smell like yogurt, even when they contain yogurt.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yo! Boba Closes in Little Bangladesh Los Angeles

Fro-yo girl here. Yo! Boba has closed. The shop sold shaved ice, coffee, yogurt and boba drinks. The most recent Instagram post was in July 2017. I didn’t get to try their frozen yogurt and no one uploaded any pictures of their frozen yogurt. Sad.

The sign on the door said the shop was closed for remodeling. There’s a chance it will return? I’m guessing that it won’t or if it does, it won’t have frozen yogurt. If they had frozen yogurt, they must have had one machine behind the counter because I can’t see the frozen yogurt machine(s) in the pictures.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Taste of South Lake Pasadena 2017

Fro-yo girl here. San Gabriel Valley’s largest culinary community event, the Taste of South Lake, is going on today, from 11 AM – 5 PM. The free event includes live music, cooking demos from celebrity chefs, a vendor village, and a long list of participating South Lake Business Association businesses. This outdoor, family friendly event features free admission and free parking. For a list of participating businesses, musical acts, and cooking demos, visit http://www.southlakeavenue.org/events/calendar/taste-of-south-lake-avenue-pasadena-2017/

I didn’t have much time this year to spend at the event, but I did swing by the one booth that I had to see, Yogurtland. They brought 6 popular flavors today: Plain Tart, Strawberry, Rocket Pop Sorbet, Cookies & Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Ice Cream. Cups are $2. They also brought the prize wheel. Prizes include coupons, Yogurtland keychains, and giant spoons (the pink and green ones). They ran out of those Platinum giant spoons.

There are lots of food vendors at the vendor village and some free samples too.

Last Week of the First National Frozen Yogurt Shop Owner Survey

Fro-yo girl here. The International Frozen Yogurt Association is seeking the input of all owners of foodservice businesses that serve frozen yogurt in the United States. The National Frozen Yogurt Shop Owner Survey asks about shop performance, satisfaction with suppliers, operational practices, management, etc.

The survey is open to anyone who owns a business that serves frozen yogurt in the US. Owners can sign up to receive the survey results while taking the survey. The results will help owners better understand how their shop compares to other shops. On the other hand, owners who do not take the survey will not have free access to the full results.

The anonymous survey takes about 7 minutes to complete, http://tinyurl.com/nationalfroyoshopsurvey

"We created the National Frozen Yogurt Survey to help our members and shop operators by providing them rich data that has never been available before. This the first time a comprehensive survey of both frozen yogurt consumers and shop operators has been conducted. We are very excited to share our findings," said Susan Linton, President of the International Frozen Yogurt Association.

Pure Smile Essence Mask Yogurt Series Review

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurt is good for the body and it’s good for your skin. The lactic acid in yogurt helps dissolve dead skin and tighten pores.

Ichiban Kan carries face masks, including Pure Smile masks. The Pure Essence Mask Yogurt Series Plain is made in Korea and manufactured by High & High, Inc. of Tokyo, Japan. One mask is 0.8 net fl oz. and sells for about #1-$1.50. The yogurt masks are available in Apple mango, White grape, Mix fruit, Strawberry, and Plain. The milk bottle packaging is really cute.

The mask smells nice like sweet yogurt. It feels sticky and stays cold and wet on the face. You apply the mask to your clean face and leave on for 10-15 minutes. It’s definitely very cooling and moisturizing. The mask is for all skin types. It has Vitamin E, collagen, hyaluronic acid (for moisturizing) and yogurt powder.

I’ve used face masks before, but not consistently, so I can’t tell which ones are better.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Yogurtland Fall Happenings with Featured Flavors: Alphonso Mango Tart and Apple Strudel with Caramel

Fro-yo girl here. Fall has arrived and that means its time for Yogurtland’s fall flavors. There are two returning flavors: Apple Strudel with Caramel and Alphonso Mango Tart. Alphonso Mango Tart returns today with a Halloween inspired flavor card. Apple Strudel will be back on October 23.

I can see how apple strudel is a fall flavor but where is Pumpkin Pie or Pumpkin Whip? I used the Flavor Finder feature and didn’t find either near me. WHY????

October is National Pumpkin Month and I need my pumpkin froyo.

P.S. I noticed there were still plenty of Hope cups and spoons. Yogurtland’s Ice Cream Beyond Imagination photo contest ends today.

Menchie’s October Promotion & World Smile Day

Fro-yo girl here. Happy World Smile Day! World Smile Day was created by Harvey Ball, the commercial artist who created the smiley face, and it’s been celebrated since 1999. His idea was that each of us should devote one day a year to smiles and kind acts.

Menchie’s celebrated World Smile Day today with a special buy one, get one free offer from 4 PM – 7 PM. It was a chance to grab a friend or loved one and share some quality bonding time over froyo. I swung by Menchie’s and didn’t see the fun activities and prizes that the sign mentioned, but you probably had to ask and they were probably for kids.

It was also a good time to check out October’s feature flavors, Harvest Pumpkin (a fall favorite) and the new Cookies ‘n Cream Cheesecake made with Oreo cookie pieces and real cream cheese.

I enjoyed the spices and real pumpkin flavor of Harvest Pumpkin. I recommend pairing it with graham cracker crumbs, almonds, Heath Bar pieces, and Cool Whip, of course.

The Cookies ‘n Cream Cheesecake that I tried was on the icy side and dark brown (unappealing color). It tasted mostly like Oreos to me with a hint of cream cheese. The combination didn’t appeal to me even though I love Oreos, but I should try it again at a location where the yogurt is creamier.

I picked up the scary spoons too. They’re identical to the Chip and Mookie Halloween spoons they had last year.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

7 Eleven Select Lotte Yogurt Jelly Review

Fro-yo girl here. I found Lotte Yogurt Jelly gummy candy during a recent trip to Candy Doll Beauty in San Francisco’s Japantown. The packaging is certainly eye-catching. It looks like a giant bottle of Yakult, the probiotic beverage. Lotte Yogurt Jelly is sold at 7-Eleven stores in Korea. It’s available in three flavors: Original Yogurt, Strawberry Yogurt, Apple Yogurt. The list of ingredients is in Korean only, so I’m not sure what’s in it. A pouch weighs 50g.

* Original Yogurt Jelly: There were about 15 translucent bottle shaped gummy candies in the pouch. The lower half of the bottle was a darker yellow, while the top half was clear. It was firm and chewy but not too firm. Texture wise, it’s much like gummy bears. The flavor was tarter than I expected and I liked that, but then the powdery flavor of Yakult set in. Overall, it’s not bad but I don’t like Yakult, so I wasn’t a huge fan.

Candy Doll had the Original Yogurt and Strawberry Yogurt flavors, for $5 per pouch.

3 out of 5 stars.

You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.

Menchie’s No Sugar Added Very Vanilla

Fro-yo girl here. I spotted NSA Very Vanilla at Menchie’s for the first time. It’s different from NSA Very Vanilla Bean which is made with sucralose/Splenda. NSA Very Vanilla is sweetened with Stevia + Monkfruit and has no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, and no high fructose corn syrup. I was intrigued since I haven’t seen monkfruit in frozen yogurt before. On the other hand, I haven’t liked any yogurt with Stevia. It has a bitter, unpleasant aftertaste. Personally, I’d rather see less sugar in froyo than sugar alternatives.

* NSA Very Vanilla: The yogurt was creamy and had lots of visible vanilla bean specks. The flavor was certainly sweet, as sweet as a yogurt made with sugar, but it had a weird, bitter, slightly fruity aftertaste. If you can ignore the aftertaste, the flavor is okay.

NSA Very Vanilla isn’t listed on the Menchie’s website. Maybe they’re still testing it?

Yogurtland’s NEW Giant Platinum Froyo Spoons

Fro-yo girl here. There’s something so satisfying about cute collectible froyo spoons. They’re practical, long-lasting, and adorable. So, I’m definitely excited about the giant Platinum collector’s spoons at Yogurtland.

At 16 inches, the new spoons are even bigger than the other giant Yogurtland spoons. The trophy design makes it feel very special. The message on the back of the spoon made me smile too. Love you too, Yogurtland.

To get your own giant 16” Yogurtland spoon, spend $15 or more in one transaction, after any discounts have been applied. Do it soon because the offer is for a limited time only, while supplies last.
